The Solutions Forum is a popular Hub LA program in which Hub LA members act as “consultants” for a day to help a nonprofit address some of their most pressing issues. The Solutions Forum is a member-driven event, meaning it was conceived by a member and is put on by members. We are proud to partner with Jesse Clarke on the Solutions Forum, so we asked her to write a bit about this awesome program and incredible resource for consultants and nonprofits.
It’s not uncommon to see the Hub LA classroom is buzzing with energy, but every so often it’s buzzing with a unique energy. One morning a quarter, there’s a group of advisors gathered for an intense two-hour session working with a nonprofit brainstorming new ideas and breaking through barriers to progress. They are participating in the LA Solutions Forum a new HUB LA program in partnership with Hub LA member Jesse Clarke of Capacity Lab.
This is not a conference room with a nonprofit standing in front of a powerpoint presentation and consultants sitting around the table doling out cookie cutter advice. This is not where experience in the nonprofit sector is required. Instead this is a group of HUB LA members – experts from diverse fields applying their knowledge and business acumen to nonprofit’s challenges. Each month there is a different group of volunteer advisors that work together as a superstar brainstorming team cranking out new ideas in a safe creative space where previously untapped resources, tools, and ideas can be discovered.
The LA Solutions Forum format opens with a brief period of getting to know each other and the nonprofit with a focus on the project or idea they are bringing to the table. With a clear understanding of the nonprofits needs and specific questions assigned, the next period of time is spent brainstorming in breakout groups and filling out a structure template of ideas generated. The session is completed with report outs of the fresh content and ideas to the entire group. To top it all off, a graphic record (see image below) visually captures key ideas and the moments that sparked innovation.

The December presenting nonprofit was GroceryShips and we kicked off the New Year with the African American Board Leadership Institute. During these two sessions, the team of advisors tackled everything from mapping out various fundraising paths to uncovering untapped resources for sponsorship program ambassadors.
The LA Solutions Forum is changing the way we tackle the most pressing issues of the Los Angeles social sector and we would love for you to join us as we continue to build this innovative program.
