When Hub LA launched in September 2012, we had this question in mind: How can we accomplish real, substantive change as individuals, as the intersection of individuals, as organizations and businesses? On Sunday, we saw change in action at the launch of Civic Innovation Lab. Civic Innovation Lab is a novel ten-month long community-driven solutions forum that aims to tackle issues plaguing Los Angeles using design challenges drawn from the city’s Open Data. Conceived by […] Read More

The Solutions Forum is a popular Hub LA program in which Hub LA members act as “consultants” for a day to help a nonprofit address some of their most pressing issues. The Solutions Forum is a member-driven event, meaning it was conceived by a member and is put on by members. We are proud to partner with Jesse Clarke on the Solutions Forum, so we asked her to write a bit about this awesome program […] Read More

Move over Tony Hawk. There’s a new skateboarding talent in town: Thalente. Thalente Biyela’s inspiring narrative is one that makes his skateboarding talent even more remarkable. The South African teenager was homeless since the age of nine. He was illiterate. He posted a video online asking for skateboarding sponsors. The video went viral. He moved to California and, through the support of pro-skater Kenny Anderson, became internationally recognized in the pro-skateboarding world. Then there’s Natalie […] Read More

You wouldn’t think that a squid sailing to the sun, a play-doh golem, and an 11-year old’s discovery of AOL Instant Messenger chat rooms have much to do with each other. Any of the 175 guests at Writing Pad LA’s holiday storytelling party at Hub LA, however, could tell you otherwise. The Los Angeles writing school’s party featured live readings and performances from Ben Loory (“This American Life” contributor), DC Pierson (Community, Weeds), Issa Rae […] Read More

A Launch Party Recap and Heartfelt Thank You Last Thursday, September 20th, we celebrated the launch of Hub Los Angeles with over 500 of our closest friends, supporters, and sponsors. As is usually the case when cocktails, music, and a photo booth is involved, the photos are fantastic. And in some cases, fantastically incriminating. Visit the Picturesque Photobooth gallery to see the hard evidence. DJ B Hen on the turntables got the dance floor hot- […] Read More
